FAITH & WORK
We believe that for any professing Christian who is involved in business, the most essential factor in having and maintaining a Christian witness is to have counted the cost first.
The relevant passage in Luke 14 is worth considering: “ Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, “This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.”
Unfortunately many professing Christians have not taken the step of personally coming to Christ through repentance and faith, and so in times of testing when perhaps some moral standard they adhere to is challenged, they only have their own resources and strength to fall back upon, rather than being in Christ and He being their all in all. Any person who does not belong to Christ cannot be sustained by Him in times of testing, so the essential thing is to know who you are – a follower of Christ in every situation. This means that by entering through faith to a new life in Christ you are no longer a business person, a doctor or a Garda – you are a follower of Jesus Christ. You will now be able to say together with the apostle Paul “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4.13
